Cape Coral Teen will play in US Women's Open
If you've lived in Cape Coral for even a brief time, then you've probably heard her name mentioned. As one of southwest Florida's most promising athletes, Michelle Shin is beginning to receive the notice that her golf game deserves. As a recent graduate of southwest Florida's Canterbury School, she is no stranger to challenges. As for her experience on the links, Ms. Shin has played in the U.S. Girls' Junior numerous times, as well as the U.S. Women's Amateur, not to mention other tournaments. Undaunted by the pressure and scrutiny of this past Monday's sudden-death playoff at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club, she emerged victorious to clench the final spot for July's U.S. Women's Open in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Having shot a final round 72 in sectional qualifying, she spent the better part of the afternoon waiting to find out if her score was bettered. Knowing the very stiff competition to be found at sectionals, she was surprized and elated to finally make it to the Open
Michelle is excited about the opportunity, having always wanted top play in the open before attending college. While she has attempted to qualify for the Open on four previous occasions, having made the Open, she is now poised to receive some well-deserved recognition for her professional potential.
Because southwest Florida is no stranger to both up-and-coming golfers, as well as professionals, Ms. Shin is fast becoming part of an elite group. Even though that group includes such names as Patty Berg, Rocco Mediate, Catherine Cartwright and others, Ms. Shin's game makes her 'right at home' among them.
