It's Official - Mayor Feichthaler Resigns !
This past Tuesday, Eric Feichthaler, the city's youngest mayor ever, tendered his resignation. While he will remain on the job until November 17th, that will be his last day he will serve as Cape Coral's mayor. Having opened an election account in June of this past year, Mayor Feichthaler made official his intentions to run for the Lee County Commission's District 1 seat with Tuesday's resignation.
If he does get elected to that seat, he will serve the broader interests of Lee County, including Cape Coral, Pine Island, Matlacha, Sanibel, Captiva and Upper Captiva and also Boca Grande. But he certainly won't be running unopposed, Feichthaler will, likely, face incumbent Bob Janes and another candidate, Gerard David, in a primary Aug. 26th for the Republican spot on the ballot. The non-partisan Sanibel councilwoman, Carla Lee Brooks, is also is running for the District 1 seat.
Whatever the outcome, one repercussion of Feichthaler's resignation is clear ; Cape Coral's City Council will need to find a replacement to fulfill the final year of the mayor's term. By law, they have 30 days to find that replacement. The present city council, namely Delores Bertolini, has expressed support for the idea of appointing one of the Cape's present Council members.
