As the final flights depart from Regional South West and head north, we know that the doldrums of summer will soon be upon us. For the southwest Floridian, these are the days of incomparable heat and humidity, late afternoon rain showers and much shorter commute times to work. I guess I have to admit it. This is my favorite time of the year !

It's a great time to plan that backyard barbeque, go fishing, get away to the beach or just hang around the pool. Football season's coming ! I know that many residents feel the same as I do. After all, these are the lazy, hazy days of summer.

With all of the nation facing recession and deciding exactly how to spend that new incentive check, it might just be a good time to plan ahead for the coming year. Sure, it's also a good time to check out the affordable vacation options for the family, but gas prices are, likely, going to dictate that we all stay a bit closer to home this year.

Disney World and Universal Studios will, of course, be more crowded than ever as the European s will flock our way on "holiday", But it's still a lot of fun and how many more years will the kids still enjoy it ? Now is the time when that season pass can come in pretty handy, right ? Since gas has about reached $4.00 per gallon, staying close to home isn't a bad idea.

In the unlikely case that you've socked away a few extra bucks this past season, and are so inclined, it's also a great time to think about buying a home ! Interest rates ( for those who qualify ) haven't been this low in nearly ten years. The same is true for home prices. It's certainly still a buyer's market.

Whatever you do this season, whether or not you can take a vacation, be sure to take a little time out for yourself. Most of all, remember that you're not alone here. It's a sure bet that the coming year will bring better times for our community. We'll still be here putting out all of the best that Cape Coral and southwest Florida has to offer. Remember, too, that we're the destination everyone will return to...eventually.
