Cape Coral has seen better days. As the tourist season descends upon southwest Florida, business owners are gearing up with hope that it will be prosperous. Despite the slower economy, a proposed multi-million dollar swimming center in the NE Cape, headed up by the National Swim Center Corporation and USA Swimming may be a step closer to becoming a reality.

Although there are many contingencies, the basic premise is for Cape Coral to construct a combined swimming complex, hotel and convention center prior to 2012 in an effort to be able to host a possible series of NCAA swimming events, as well as provide a home to a swimming school operated by former Olympic champion, Rowdy Gaines. The nearly $115 million dollar planned facility has recently completed the first phase of it's feasibility study.

Given the successful completion of the study in conjunction with the city council's support, groundbreaking for the facility which is slated to be constructed on the 180-acre tract of land known as the Academic Village north of Kismet Parkway along Del Prado Boulevard could begin very soon.

If the National Swim Center Corporation's stated economic impact potential of nearly $36 million is even remotely correct, the City of Cape Coral could certainly be on a quicker road to economic recovery, once the project becomes a certainty.
