Take Me Out to the Brickyard

SWFL NewsJust as another Memorial Day has arrived, so, too, have all the traditions surrounding it. During the holiday, many Americans will reflect on their personal gratitude for the men and women who have paid the ultimate price for the freedom we all enjoy. Today we remember with reverence those who have gone before us.

One American tradition historically centered on the Memorial Day weekend is the running of the Indianapolis 500 at that city's Motor Speedway, more affectionately known as 'The Brickyard'. From the words; "Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Engines" to the dropping of the checkered flag, this race, representing the world's brightest and most talented drivers, is filled with excitement and intensity.

With a history that now dates back a century, the Indianapolis 500 is as American as Apple pie. While the race itself has a rich history, so does the Speedway. While the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909, the first 500 wasn't run until 1911, which means the centennial celebration is, actually, a three year celebration.

There are many names on the Borg Warner trophy. After Sunday's race, Brazilian, Helio Castroneves, added his to it for a third time. Given the year Señor Castroneves has had, this win was particularly special. With a Brazilian Indy 500 winning tradition that dates back to Emerson Fittipaldi, and too many to mention since "Emo", Brazil takes racing very seriously. In Brazil, the name Ayrton Senna holds a near deity status.

From the war of attrition ( that began on lap one this year ) to several fairly serious crashes that brought out the caution flag, to a restart with about 18 laps to go, this year's 500 was filled with excitement, drama, and passion, all steeped in tradition. When the checkered flag fell, Helio got to drink the milk of Victory Lane, but Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick joined him on the podium, all truly winners.

In the midst of our nation's day of reverence, we hold dear the memories of those lost in our nation's struggle, while still celebrating those institutions that make us uniquely American. Happy Memorial Day !
