Spring Has Sprung !

Paradise PonderingsWinter is apparently over (sob!). The killer heat will blast into Florida at any minute, and my eldest kitten has gone into heat for the first time.

I much prefer the quiet of the all too short coolish days of winter. I would sit on my couch cuddled up to the front window, hot chocolate in hand, air conditioner full blast, and pretend it was a freezing cold winter day up north. Then I'd walk outside in my T-shirt and shorts and break a sweat swimming through the humidity to the car.

I have spent most of my adult life in Florida so at least I don't have to deal with lawn care. In my years of rented houses while I was a single mom, they were mostly the kind that the landlords had covered over the lawn with cement painted green to save the trouble of tending to all that nature. Plus, concrete keeps away the burrowing animals, giant mutant crabs, and various snakes. But, alligators do like to warm their tummies on the green cement. So it's a toss up.

To newcomers: Most Floridians, if they're not living in a cement enriched single family home, either live in condos or McMansions. There's no outdoor work connected with either one. Condos hire folks to tend the walkways and pool, and mow the patch of grass, and McMansions owners also hire others to tend to their outdoors.

The thing with McMansions though, is the houses are so overwhelmingly huge there's usually no land surrounding them. There might be a walkway to the backyard which are 100 percent filled with pools and tennis courts, and maybe an authentic cactus shipped in from Arizona, but the only true green you'll see are the palm trees lit up at night. Can you imagine spending a couple of million bucks on a house that is literally 10 feet from your neighbor? Me neither. Give me enough cash to buy one of those hideous monsters and I'd buy 20 acres in Wyoming and plop a log cabin in the middle.

So, I'm not all that familiar with yards although I do have a tiny one now. Last year I bought at a garage sale my first ever lawn mower. Husband Jim is still rolling his eyes, and it's been months since I toted it home. The thing is, it doesn't have an engine. It's just a couple of wheels, some blades and a handle to push it with. I tried it out last year and it made an impressive path in the long grass, but it wasn't really cutting anything. Turns out I have to find someone to sharpen the blades. My nail file didn't do a thing.

I did discover if I kept the kitten in plenty of cat nip and the occasional kitty tranquilizer, that she'll sleep through the night at least. The rest of the time she's begging me in no uncertain terms to find her a mate. She'll yowl and vocalize and purr and then squinch down on her stomach and wave her tail in the air. She's saying, "C'mon, I'm ready, I'll take on all the neighboring Toms, come find meeeeeee!"

So now instead of new tires for the car I'm saving up for Kitty-Kitty's operation. I'd rather go skidding off the road into a canal than endure another month of howling misery.

ROFLOLOL!! Having once lived in Cape Coral for many years, I completely understand every single one of your sentiments and agree with them whole-heartedly... However; having moved to NW Utah back in '04, I've experienced many a really cold winter, but this past winter has been the worst. We had a record amount of snowfall, (not the bubble maching making kind of snow - but the real freezing deal LOL), so I'm looking forward to summer right now; however, if was still living in Florida I'd be dreading it and not welcoming summertime!

And speaking of snow, you will get a hug laugh out of what I'm about to share with you. As I just mentioned, this winter has been a very long and COLD one with record amounts of snowfall (and drifts)...but January is when we experienced the very worst of winter. And on one week in particular was very bad. Instead of taking forever to recall that week, I will instead share an excerpt of a letter I sent to a friend of mine, which completely capture just how awful this past winter has been for us LOL ... (I've edited out the personal contents of the letter)

-----Beginning of Letter Excerpt----

Hi!

It snowed like crazy on Sunday, Jan. 6th - the day Branden (our oldest son) flew back to school in Idaho, and it took us quite a bit of time just to get to the airport! However, the drive home took even longer - especially as we had to take his girlfriend (who came with us to see Bran off at the airport)home and she lives a good thirty-forty minute drive away from our home...but it was the weather - at points white out conditions - which made the drive home so long and trecherous. We were in that car the majority of the day, courtesy of the snowy weather. What would've taken about an hour and half to drive (I'm figuring in the drive to and from my son's girlfriend's house along with the commute home from the airport) literally took us over six and a half HOURS to do. NOT fun!

However if that Sunday was bad, this past Wednesday (Jan 9th) was even worse!! We ended up getting almost two feet of snow!! That storm sat over us for hours and hours - and didn't move until late that night!! It literally snowed all day long - with no let up! And while this major storm system was literally stalled right smack on top of us, the morning and afternoon weather forecasters kept informing everyone that it would be a clear day, with only maybe a few flurries of snow falling -if that! RIGHT!!! ROFLOL Had they simply stuck their heads out the window they would've seen how wrong their forecast was!

Apparently this major storm front didn't show up on their radar at all (a fact which was their main news story that night, and during their evening newscast they explained how their radar was down and had been down all day long. LOL NO Kidding!?! LOL All they had to do was simply stick their weather brained little heads OUT the window of their offices, and they would've seen what the rest of us already KNEW - that IT WAS SNOWING - and SNOWING HARD without let up! What a bunch of morons LOL!!!

So we got almost two feet of snow from a storm system, which apparently didn't even "exist" according to the weather forecasters' equipments. LOL. CLASSIC!!!

And just to give you an idea of just how bad it snowed from this "imaginary snowstorm" - Mike (my husband) had set off for work, and forty minutes later he'd only been able to travel three miles...that's right three -3- count them - THREE little miles... Mike (who LOVES driving in snow) decided enough was enough and turned around and came home. It took him even longer to get back. He didn't go in to work that day, and all because of this "invisible" snow storm we were smack dab in the middle of that entire day and long night!! (Mike practically NEVER takes off from work - even when he's sick!)

We ended up keeping our youngest son home from school too. Mike got home just in time to walk with us to the bus stop. Mike left around 5:30 am - our son’s bus comes at 8:00 am... Since I obviously wasn’t expecting him home so soon, my hubby scared the crud out of me when he walked in just as my son and I were getting ready to head out! LOL. ANYWAYS - the three of us walked to our youngest son's bus stop. Now mind you I'd called transportation to see if their school buses were even running...and they assured me they were - although they were running late. (Gee no kidding?)

At any rate, while waiting for the school bus, we helped a lady whose car got stuck in our complex entrance. I flagged down one of our neighbors to help us. It took a rope and his big heavy duty truck to pull the lady's car out of the snow and ice!

Meanwhile we waited for the bus to come. We waited about thirty minutes or so, and would have waited a longer - but when a car on the road almost slid into us - I decided it was simply WAAY TOO dangerous for our youngest son to go to school. I'd rather he missed a day of school than wait at the bus stop, where we could get hit by a car, not to mention that since the school bus he rides is not properly equipped with seat belts - I felt it would be prudent for my son to stay home, especially since it was an early dismissal day anyways.

When I called the school, to inform them of why I was keeping my son home from school - going so far as to tell the lady about our almost getting hit by a sliding car - she said she'd been getting phones calls like mine all morning long, and that they were debating about whether or not they should close the school for the day.

Personally, I think they should have closed the school, but from what I gather, they didn't. They probably debated with each other and the head office all morning long until it was time to send the kids home at the time they were supposed to be let out. Have I mentioned how much I don't like this school district? What a bunch of morons!!

It should have been overly obvious by 6 am (by which time there was quite a bit of snow accumulation already, not to mention that their commute invovled white out conditions at times, because the snow and wind were blowing so hard) that they should’ve closed the school for the day. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that they consulted with the weather forecasters to see what the weather was goingto be like that day, when all they needed to do was stick their heads out a window to see how truly bad this storm was - a recommendation I think the weathermen should’ve done as well...

MAJORLY ROLLING MY EYES HERE at the moronic thinking of these people!!

At any rate - Wednesday turned out to be a really fun day for Mike, Camerons (our youngest son), and I. We got to spend the day together - playing out in the snow, watching movies, and just having a terrific family day!! It was great day!! It was like getting a mini-vacation unexpectedly!!

It's supposed to snow again today, or so the weathermen keep stating. LOL - But so far the sky is clear. Wanna bet we get no snow? LOL I’ve come to the conclusion that whatever the weather people say the weather is going to be like for the day - it will undoubtedly be the exact opposite!!

-----End of Letter Excerpt----

LOL So while I totally understand and sympathesize with your dread of summer, I can hardly wait for summer to arrive! LOL
