Andrew Widman - A Tragedy Turns Triumphant
A mere week has now passed since the night of Officer Andrew Widman's untimely death at the hands of a known criminal and wanted man. His wife, Suzanna and her three small children have had to face the loss of a husband and father. It has been an especially difficult week for Lee County. But due primarily to the actions of the Fort Myers Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff's Office, it would not be a week that would pass without hope. The funeral this past Wednesday drew both the support of law officials from around the state, and also local mourners from the community. Traffic was tied up for some time while the procession went on for almost three miles. It was noted as having been a very warm ceremony with many co-workers of Andrew speaking of his honor and friendship.
Despite the extreme sense of loss felt within the community, it was decided something had to be done to help Officer Widman's family. The "Drop In The Bucket" campaign to raise funds was born. In the past 72 hours, the local law enforcement drive has met with a welcome reception from local residents, who have come "out of pocket" with support that is rumored to already exceed $100,000 !
A press conference slated for 10:00 AM Monday morning at the Fort Myers Police headquarters is when law enforcement officials will present the final check.
The ultimate good that will come from that money will go a long way in helping the family cope with what can only be called a tragic loss. As Ms. Widman begins to rebuild her life, the community can feel better knowing that our reaching out will genuinely help build a brighter future for Officer Widman's three children.
