What's Going On This Summer ?

The summer in southwest Florida is known as the off-season. It's a time when locals regroup, vacation, and often try to relax before the coming tourist season is, once again, upon us. While a lot of events are slated for the more populous months, some of our best festivals and activities are actually reserved for the summer months.

Because the beach is always a popular option where "things to do" is concerned, we thought it important to point out some activities that are taking place during our off season and offer a lot of enjoyment without requiring huge amounts of cash.



Southwest Florida Parks offer some of the finest recreational activity to be found in the entire state. According to the Department of Environmental Protection's Secretary, Michael Sole; “Recreation and Parks Month is an excellent time for family and friends to visit a state park and experience … the real Florida".

While the Kayak Shack at the Ecological Preserve may be closed, you can still rent a kayak at Lover's Key. Of course, there's still plenty of fun just walking the boardwalk at Eco Preserve. Kids Kayak Fishing Camp kicked off it's second session this week.

Maybe being on the water isn't your style, or you think it's too darned hot. If that's the case, why not try out DJ Jam Night at the Wm. "Bill" Austen Youth center ? Okay, the kids will enjoy that but maybe it's not quite the little getaway that you had envisioned. If that's true, you may want to check out the Seminole Hard Rock Casino Day Trip ? It's adult style fun and there's even food and a free $20.00 gaming voucher to get you started ! Trying to have half as much fun on twice the money would be difficult.

How about something else outdoors ? You might want to try out the Family Beach Walk on Sanibel. If the beach isn't your thing, maybe, instead, you'd enjoy some family time on the links ? If so, your timing may be perfect as we're in the middle of Family Golf Month at the Coral Oaks Golf Course. If you've been wanting to golf, now's the right time to do just that !

If none of these options sound good, how about a movie ? Almost everyone enjoys a movie now and again. The Free Family Film Festival offers a daytime option here. But if you prefer your movies in the evening, why not head for Cinema Under The Stars ? Either option is free, so it's hard to beat the cost !
