LeeWay began issuing transponders in 1997. These were the type which did not have a replaceable battery. If you are in possession of one of these original transponders, LeeWay is suggesting that you have it replaced. The primary reason is that while they still may function on the LeeWay system in our county, they are not compatible with changes in the technology used to read them by several other Florida Toll agencies. These include the Florida Turnpike Enterprise's Sun Pass, as well as E-Pass and O-Pass. If you are using a older style transponders, Lee way suggest using only the cash lanes when travelling other toll roads in Florida in order to avoid receiving a citation in the mail. They also recommend a quick trip by the LeeWay service center to replace these older style transponders. The cost is $25 dollars plus tax. By mid 2008, Lee County will need to upgrade the LeeWay system to maintain compatibility with the SunPass System. At that time, the older transponders will become obsolete in Lee County as well. Replacement will be necessary for all customers that wish to continue to use the LeeWay system for their electronic toll payment.

Yes, it's true...I'm replying to my own post ! ( In truth, the article about LeeWay transponders seemed, strangely and coincidentally, relevant to the current situation facing Cape residents. ) It is true that the Lee County Board of Commissioners has approved the toll increase to $2.00 for a one-way ride into the Cape over both toll bridges.

As a resident, my concern is accountability. In the recent wake of the Public Safety Building fiasco in Cape Coral, we, as citizens, need to make certain we elect officials that will fairly represent their constituencies. Let's demand some explanation as to why this is necessary and for which projects these additional revenues will be allocated !

Question You know I never understood why residents always have to pay when you leave & pay to get home ...but my real concern in the transponders. Having had an original one when I had to move away from paradise & realized it was totally useless anywhere else it was frustrating. I cannot understand why they do not offer some sort of trade in for these old systems and why when it was started when sunpass was already in cities like Miami, Orlando etc... why the greedy little buggers didnt do what was best for there residents & not themselves....
