Exercise: The Staple of Good Health

SWFL Health and Well-Being

Whether it is caused by working late, handling extra responsibility, or simply our regular workload, one unfortunate reality of the modern world is stress. Because nearly everyone faces challenges that can make us feel run down, or even ill, it is important to adopt a lifestyle that allows us to push our limits, without breaking our backs! Most people are aware that exercise is something that can be beneficial to our well-being, but it may be the specifics of exactly how where there is confusion. A respected group of physicians recently published a simple, but definitive report about the benefits of regular physical activity. While none of their findings were an epiphany, their seven facts regarding the clear and unequivocal benefits associated with exercise are undeniable.

In a career spanning more than 60 years, Mike Wallace interviewed some of the most charismatic and controversial persons and political figures of the 20th century.

Spring Comes In Like A Lion...

Paradise Pondering

Southwest Florida has never been known to have four, distinctive seasons. It has almost always been lauded as one of the hottest locations in Florida. While the rest of our country was enjoying their mild winter, southwest Florida's winter never actually happened. I mean, in all honesty, it didn't really get cold here at all! Sure we had a few days of cooler temperatures, but nothing that resembled freezing cold temperatures. For those of us who are year-round residents, we like this warmer weather. Each year, when the Arctic blasts chill the midwest and eastern seaboard, the snowbirds start arriving here in droves.

What is Earth Hour?

SWFL Green Living

On Saturday, March 31st at 8:30PM, millions of people will power down and turn off for one hour. As a movement that began in a single city, Earth Hour attempts to take involvement to a global scale this year. If you're planning on being a part of this event, you should know why it's important.

Based upon the simple fact that 'if only one hour and one voice is important, it is yours', Earth Hour promises to bring global recognition to the response to climate change.

The Art of Gratuity

Cape Coral Business

Since the establishment of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the United States Department of Labor has been responsible for establishing wage standards for registered employers. According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, the current minimum hourly wage earned by any non-tax exempt employee has been established to be $7.25 per hour. The last time the D.O.L. raised the minimum wage amount was back in 2009. At the time, that wage was adjusted upward for inflation, the corresponding minimum wage for "Tipped employees" didn't change. For a tipped employee, an employer is ** “only required to pay $2.13 an hour in direct wages, if that amount plus the tips received equals at least the federal minimum wage..”.

Given the disparity between these wages, it can be inferred that 'tipping accordingly' is nothing short of an art form, best practiced by people with prior service experience and adequate math skills.

Jicama Salad

SWFL Cuisine

If you've never had jicama, pronounced HEE-ka-mah, you're in for a treat! Jicama is a root vegetable that resembles a turnip in appearance, but it tastes very different. Jicama is mostly eaten raw, and is crispy and starchy like a potato, but it is sweet. It is wonderful in salads, and is popular in latin dishes. When buying jicama, choose a firm, medium sized jicama with dry roots. They can get rather large in size, but they have a better taste if they are about the size of a large onion or smaller.

This is a simple, light and easy recipe to try for first timers and jicama lovers alike!

The Importance of Ecotourism

Cape Coral Recreation

According to Wikipedia, Ecotourism is a form of tourism involving visiting fragile, pristine, and usually protected areas, intended as a low impact and often small scale alternative to standard commercial tourism.

Because southwest Florida provides nearly innumerable opportunities for both visitors and local residents to experience unique ecosystems, the ethical oversight, preservation of cultural heritage and stewardship of our natural resources is of paramount importance!

Fortunately, the non-profit organization, Florida SEE, exists and enables our local community with all of this. According to John Kiseda, Florida SEE's Executive Director and a Florida Master Naturalist; "Given the continuous growth of SWFL's ecotourism industry, the need for responsible and professional oversight of this industry can not be overstated".

1st Annual Love Fest 4 Pets

SWFL Events, Insights and Observations

Skies were cloudy Sunday morning, but temperatures were only slightly cooler than usual as the first annual Love Fest 4 Pets got underway at Sunsplash Family Waterpark in Cape Coral. A wide variety of vendors participating in the day's activities set up their tents and displays. Both spirits and energies were high as the day got underway.

This premier event was an opportunity for locals to come out and bring their pets to enjoy the festivities and learn about adoption groups, local pet services and suppliers, too. The event really offered something for all pet lovers!
